#LocalGovt16: Councillor switches to JLP but PNP promises to retain Port Maria Division
ST MARY, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) is confident that it will retain the Port Maria Division in St Mary.
Senator Floyd Morris, who is the campaign manager for PNP candidate Timroy Shaw, expressed confidence on Monday.
“I am confident that at the end of the day the PNP will retain the seat,” he said when OBSERVER ONLINE caught up with him at the Port Maria Primary School.
Shaw, a teacher at the Port Maria Primary School, replaced Trecia Harris-Smiley who held the seat for the division over the last four years.
Harris-Smiley recently joined the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), however, she did not vie for a parish council seat in today’s Local Gov’t Election.
Jermaine Smiley is the JLP candidate for the division.
On Monday, Senator Morris said that as was happening across the country, voting in the division was slow. However, he was still confident.
Morris said despite the intense rivalry between the two political parties, there were no reports of incidents in the division.
