CC, KC rule ISSA/Tru-Juice U-14, U-16 all-island titles
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The 2016 Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) football season came to a dramatic end on Monday at Manchester High as Cornwall College and Kingston College won the ISSA/Tru-Juice Under-14 and Under-16 titles, respectively, both on penalty kicks.
Rural aea champions Cornwall College, who were travelling to central Jamaica three times in a seven-day span, beat Corporate Area champions Tivoli Gardens High 5-4 in sudden-death penalties after they played out a 1-1 draw after 70 minutes of regulation and another 10 in extra time. Both teams took a combined 18 shots from the penalty spot.
Corporate Area champions Kingston College retained their Under-16 title beating a resilient Clarendon College 4-2 on penalty kicks after giving up a first-half 1-0 lead to trail 2-1 in the second half, before forcing 14 minutes of extra time after the regulation 80 minutes.
In the first game, Cornwall College’s goalkeeper Jordan Shaw made five saves in the penalty shoot-out to keep his team in the game before scoring the deciding kick against his counterpart, David Martin, who had scored his team’s first kick.
It was sweet redemption for Shaw, who had given up a second-half penalty as his team was trying to hold on to their first-half lead against a Tivoli Gardens High who were unlucky after hitting the bar twice in the game.
Cornwall College took the lead in time added on at the end of the first half when Calvin Stephenson headed home a corner kick.
Tivoli’s Javante Parnell, who had hit the inside of the far-right post with a brilliant free kick in the 22nd minute, hit the crossbar with a vicious shot early in the second half.
The Corporate Area team eventually drew level after Shaw fouled a Tivoli Gardens High player in the six-yard box and Noel Buchanan easily dispatched the spot kick in the 59th minute.
After failing to add to the score, it went to penalties, which was tied at 4-4 after the first five, before the dramatics started.
Shaw and Martin saved seven of the next eight shots taken. Shaw then bounced his kick past Martin to secure the victory for Cornwall College.
Kaheem Allen, Stephenson, Dishaun Dobson and Giovanni Bruce scored for Cornwall College in regulation penalties, while Martin, Tah-J Bucknor, Domonic Howell, and Shaquan Green scored for Tivoli Gardens High.
In the Under-16 game, Clarendon College, who started as underdogs and finished with 10 players after Ricardo McIntosh was sent off, came from a goal down against a Kingston College team packed with sprinters, but held their own to produce an outstanding game between two well-prepared teams.
McIntosh went from hero to zero as he had scored Clarendon College’s second goal that gave then the lead, picking up a second yellow card.
Kingston College started the better team and pinned the rural area team back in their own half for long periods and should have led 2-0 by midway the first half but for some impatience on the part of their strikers.
After seeing Kamoy Asher save an effort from Clarendon’s Nique Daley off the line after goalkeeper Shanthamoi Brown was beaten, Jamarie Morrison produced a free kick of the highest order, beating the Clarendon College goalkeeper Obion Smith at the top left-hand corner of the goal to give his team the lead.
Clarendon College hit back, however, with Daley pulling them level early in the second half before McIntosh gave them the lead.
Damion Williams, who came off the substitutes’ bench in the second half, spared Kingston College some blushes, however, with his late equaliser which led to penalty kicks.
