Night Light gets it right, as Khaleesi’s Revenge makes winning entry
The Jamaica Observer Trophy (Division One of a two-year-old maiden event) was a major highlight on a stellar 14-race Diamond Mile programme at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
The race was won in electrifying fashion by Night Light ridden by Dane Nelson. A two-year-old colt by Tracking out of Orphan Song , bred, owned and trained by Gary Griffiths, Night Light was one of the most advanced two-year-olds in the field of nine as there were two late scratches.
Night Light was one of the favourites to win his last race but could only manage fourth place. He was again the second favourite in the event with the Philip Feanny-trained Don Chassis – first time starter-, the 2-5 odds-on choice. However, in the hands of Nelson,Night Light was quite a different proposition to deal with on Saturday.
Hurriedly ridden last time out, Nelson waited at the back of the field as Don Chassis, who missed the break, shot through to lead shortly after the starter sent them on their way. However, by the time they straightened for the final run, Nelson had Night Light in his groove along the inner rails and went past the long-time leaders Don Chassis and Mirabilis, a 5-1 shot, under Dick Cardenas inside the final 100 metres, to win going away over 1,200 metres by four lengths.
Trainer Gary Griffiths was not one bit surprised by the bay colt’s performance.
“In his last race, the horse was too early for his own good. Night Light needed to be held off the pace and make a bid in the last two and a half furlongs. The last time it was an out of sorts ride, but now I got the perfect ride and this leaves me ecstatic, as it is always a great feeling to win even one race on a big race day such as the Diamond Mile, which pays the richest purses “, Griffiths said.
In the HITZ 92 FM Trophy Division two call, Feanny made no mistake this time as his dashing filly Khaleesi’s Revenge justified her 1- 2 favouritism by delivering the gambit with Oneil Mullings in the saddle in a smart 1:13.2. Night Light completed the course in a time 1:14.0.
The highly thought of Runallday, at odds of 5-2 with Dick Cardenas up for Anthony Nunes was a mere half-a-length behind the winner. Rambunctious Links, a 10-1 betting chance finished third under Omar Walker. Khaleesi’s Revenge and Runallday have both been provisionally entered for the one mile Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes on Boxing Day (December 27).
It is to be noticed that Khaleesi’s Revenge is a half-sister to top three-year-old Bigdaddykool, with both sharing the same dam, Beware Baby. Khaleesi’s Revenge was sired by Blue Pepsi Lodge and Bigdaddykool by Sorrentino’s Star.
