PNP, JLP clash at KSAC swearing-in
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Authorities are currently gathered outside the offices of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) in downtown Kingston to quell a ruckus involving supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and People’s National Party (PNP).
The people have gathered as KSAC councillors and new Kingston mayor, Senator Delroy Williams, are to be sworn in today.
Reports are that supporters from both political parties started hurling stones at each other just before noon, forcing police on the scene to call for reinforcement and the crowd got rowdy.
Eyewitnesses have informed OBSERVER ONLINE that supporters of outgoing Kingston mayor Angela Brown-Burke triggered the commotion when they threw bottles and stones at the JLP supporters.
The crowd is currently at a stand-off with lawmen as they refuse the police’s order to clear the area.
A total of 40 KSAC councillors elected to the new council are to be sworn in today.
The JLP gained control of the most-prized local government authority as it held on to the Rae Town Division by a single vote when the magisterial recount ended on Tuesday.
