Noranda honours outstanding Discovery Bay residents

Fourteen residents of Discovery Bay were last month honoured by the Noranda/New Day Bauxite Community Council for outstanding leadership.

The awardees, who were nominated based on their contribution to and participation in community development, represented a cross section of civic, private, and voluntary organisations in Discovery Bay and neighbouring districts.

Awards were made in the categories of education, religion, agriculture, social work, business, transportation, broadcasting, and public relations.

The awardees included two senior citizens — Daisy Wallace, family counsellor and role model, aged 99 years; and Hezekiah Whitehorn, choirmaster and soloist who formed the Trumpeteers, a group of deacons who ministered through church music around the island in the 1970s and 80s.

The list also included Whitfield Stennett, a member of the Diaspora born in Discovery Bay who became mayor of the borough of Trafford in England; Philmore Scott, businessman and philanthropist; June Clarke, Ivylyn Morgan, and Vilma Palmer, retired educators; Olga Cunningham, active Sunday School superintendent; Lloyd Russell for contribution to community and public relations; Michael Gardener for contribution to transportation for 62 years; Harvey Flemming for contribution to agriculture and social development; Livingston Green, international Rotarian; Michael Forbes, restaurateur; and Albert Edwards, legendary village hero whose outspokenness facilitated the St Ann community welcome given to the bauxite industry in the 1950s.

Institutional awards were also made to the Alloa Fishermen’s Co-operative for services to the local economy and the fishing industry;

Radio GGFM, a local gospel station recording fast-paced growth in the communities and with affiliations in the Caribbean and America; and Noranda Jamaica, for outstanding economic and social contribution.

The function was held at Port Rhoades Sports Club, Discovery Bay.

The council is a joint company and community-based organisation consisting of employees and community representatives.

Noranda/New Day Community Council Assistant Secretary Althea Scott (second left) presents the council’s institution award to Noranda representative Nordia Tracey, human resource manager, while Antoine Liddell (left), general manager, and Kent Skyers, public relations superintendent, look on..
