Gov’t to implement four climate change adaptation projects
KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — Four projects, aimed at improving climate change adaptation and mitigation are to be implemented by Government and non-government entities this fiscal year.
Governor-General Patrick Allen, made the disclosure while delivering his 2017/18 Throne Speech in the House of Representatives on Thursday.
He informed that the measures will be carried out under the on-going Caribbean Community Climate Change Coastal Adaptation Project funded by the German Development Bank, for the reduction of climate change induced risks for the population of Small Island States of the Caribbean.
The targeted entities are the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), University of the West Indies (UWI), Caribbean Coastal Area Management Foundation (C-CAM), and the Westmoreland Local Sustainable Development Programme (LSDP).
Meanwhile, the governor-general informed that the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) will be enhancing its monitoring of air quality across Jamaica this fiscal year.
He said the Government will also strengthen its capacity to enforce environmental regulations, and will collaborate with key stakeholders to develop a beach access policy.
