Sotomayor makes 2017 debut

Top two-year-old of last year Sotomayor (Traditional – Runaway Julie) makes his seasonal entry in a well-supported Overnight Allowance event which has attracted 15 starters going over seven and a half furlongs.

Trained by Anthony Nunes, Sotomayor will be partnered by his regular jockey Linton Steadman.

Sotomayor, the winner of the prestigious Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes over a mile when he beat the much toutedShe’s A Maneater on Boxing Day last year, will be racing against older horses for the first time in his career and comes in with a record of three wins from five starts. To date Sotomayor has earned just over $3.3 million.

This is a rigorous first assignment for Sotomayor as he faces tough competitors, especially in oldster Timeforarms, Ian Links, and the consistent Classy Aviator.

Timeforarms, despite his eight years, is still a tough competitor who is rounding into good form of late, having finished third and second in his last two outings. For sure, Timeforarms (Anthony Thomas) will be coming at them in the final two furlongs.

Ian Links is vastly improved with two wins and a second this season. His first run at the Overnight level (February 4) was quite encouraging, finishing second to his out of class stablemate Hover Craft.Ian Links, like Timeforarms, will give his best effort in the straight.

Classy Aviator is also on the up with a good fourth-place finish behind Royal Vibes, Timeforarms and Traditional Prince in her first run (January 21) in Overnight.

Word from the track is that Sotomayor has been working really well in the mornings coming into his first three-year-old exposure. His last gallop was on Sunday morning when, after cantering out of the chute, he galloped his last six furlongs in 1:14 3, beatingPiano Man in the process.

Many eyes will be on Sotomayor come tomorrow to see the improvement he has made over the last two months, especially with the first Classic race not too far away.

Expect Sotomayor to be around in mid-pack before challenging with three furlongs to go. It is then racing fans will find out just where he is.
