My Kingston – Owen Hill
Sports analyst, and performance management specialist
What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
Being born and raised in Portmore, my earliest memories of Kingston are limited — school trips to Coney Park, Coconut Park, the National Stadium and the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre.
What’s the most memorable meal that you have enjoyed in Kingston?
Steamed fish, okras, carrots and mashed potatoes, with a cold Guinness at Gloria’s, Port Royal.
What would you do if you were mayor of Kingston for a day?
Invest in the renovation of the National Heroes’ Park to help it become a major attraction, serve as a rich source of history, and provide persons in the area with a park of the highest quality.
What would be your recommendations to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
You can’t come to Kingston without visiting the Bob Marley Museum, running by Usain Bolt’s Tracks & Records to snap a shot with his iconic pose, and then raving all night at a street dance to witness our authentic night culture …and if time permits, passing by the noble institution of Kingston College.
How would you structure a practicable framework of sports tourism on the island?
The creation of venues and museums should be developed to honour all our sporting personalities who have done extremely well in their arenas, to capture the history, legacy and culture of their greatness. Packages designed around this experience would be sold through partnerships with entities like the Jamaica Tourist Board.
When do the abilities of a deft commentator become most crucial?
When you have to commentate to an international audience and when there is no script.
What is the next glass ceiling to be shattered in sports?
The race to gold in swimming has been very slippery, but I’m hoping we’ll get there at the next Olympics. Let’s go, Alia!
For the students who are always picked last at PE, what would they be interested to know?
Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Tom Brady and Lionel Messi are some elite athletes who were not always thought to be great and worthy of the starting line-up. The best stories unfold from the pain of having to fight your way to the top. Keep fighting!
Has corruption in sports created cynicism about winning?
As long as money is involved, there will always be corruption and scepticism of fair play. But even with complete purity in sport, every now and again we would still witness the extraordinary performance that sport brings from talented unenhanced athletes – like Usain Bolt. It is possible.
A year after the events of “don’t blush, baby”, what is its legacy?
Although the league did get some additional coverage and Chris Gayle may arguably be now an even bigger superstar, there were lessons to be learnt from it — the dos and don’ts of athlete interviews and the possibility of the heavy implications that can arise.
