‘Marlene’ in splendid Classic glory
Stamina and class were the prevailing factors for the authoritative win by Marlene My Love in Saturday’s Caribbean Choice-sponsored Jamaica Oaks at Caymanas Park.
Going 10-furlongs the stamina of
Marlene My Love against her colleague fillies was overwhelming, while her class allowed her to extract more in the final furlong and a half, in what proved to be a no contest in the end.As is the norm, the
Complete Racing Guideprovides an analysis of the 78th running of the Jamaica Oaks based on the final result.
WINNER:
MARLENE
MY
LOVE – After two rather tame efforts in the Thornbird followed by the 1000 Guineas,
Marlene
My
Love found her true self going two turns. After watching proceedings comfortably down the backstretch, the
Adore
The
Gold –
Miss
Chestnut bay filly with Jevvanne Erwin in the saddle made their move four furlongs out and was simply unstoppable. The added acceleration in the straight is a clear indication that
Marlene
My
Love is looking to go even longer than 10-furlongs (2,000m). It was a performance that opened up a whole new set of dynamics for the Derby as,
Marlene
My
Love has won going a mile (1,600m) and now 10-furlongs (2,000m). The Derby stocks of
Marlene
My
Love are flourishing. We know she stays and stays forever. A magnificent win with kudos going to her trainer Dwight Chen and jockey Erwin. In addition,
Marlene
My
Love is improving rapidly and just learning how to really run. There is more to come.
SECOND:
BILINGUAL – Did her utmost after getting into a challenging position entering the straight but her stamina limitations were vividly revealed.
Bilingualwas just beaten on the day by a horse whose time had come and at a journey which is obviously not to her liking. Good effort though and will win races going shorter.
THIRD:
VICE ROYALTY – These races always produce an unknown and this year that horse was
Vice Royalty. Racing at the back for almost the entire trip,
Vice Royalty was able to do mopping up operations in the straight.
FOURTH:
BLUE TRADITION – One of the back markers,
Blue Tradition ran on a bit in the straight, still way behind the winner to earn a reasonable slice.
FIFTH:
GREAT FAITH – probably her rightful position.
SIXTH:
THORNHILL MISS – Showed up in the earlies and then dropped off.
SEVENTH:
SARAH LEE – Set the early fractions until the ‘big ladies’ showed up.
EIGHTH:
DEAL MARKER – Not seen or heard from.
DID NOT FINISH:
MONEY MAGNET – Something went wrong and was pulled out of the race by her jockey Shane Ellis.
