Woman accused of defrauding six of $200,000 remanded
A woman, accused of defrauding $200,000 from six people she agreed to get jobs for in Florida, United States, was remanded when she appeared in the Yallahs Division of the St Thomas Parish Court last Friday.
The accused, Nodette Stewart-Rickards, 40, is charged with six counts of obtaining money by false pretence. The court heard that Stewart-Rickards, purporting to be an agent of the United States Embassy, swindled $39,000 from three complainants; $26,000 from one complainant, as well as $26,000 and US$100 from two other complainants between November 2016 and February 2017.The complainants reported the matter to the police after the jobs were not forthcoming, following which Stewart-Rickards was arrested and charged. When the matter was called up, Stewart-Rickards’ attorney Ann-Monique Bailey, during her bail application, told the court that her client has no previous conviction. Bailey argued that her client has been in custody since March 17, and that she was transferred from Duhaney Park Police Station to Morant Bay Police Station. The court was told that additional matters of a similar nature are to be brought before the court.Parish judge Luciana Ramsay-Jackson subsequently denied bail and set May 10 for the matter to be heard again.
