Next act in Angelique’s Magic May 31
The next staging in Angelique Cohen’s ‘Magic’ music series is scheduled for May 31 at Alternative Music on Keesing Avenue in Kingston.
Cohen says the fund-raising event, which will be titled ‘Magic Jukebox’, has so far secured performance commitments from Charmaine Limonius, Wayne McGregor, Nico Groskopf, and Rupert Bent. She plans to have other artistes on the show which she hopes will help her meet her ultimate aim of starting a
Youtube channel with motivational and inspirational shows to help people going through depression.Cohen told the
Jamaica Observer that she estimates that she’ll need at least $1.5 million to start the channel. As such, she intends to establish a GoFundMe account this month. The music series has its foundation in Cohen’s personal experiences of clinical depression and anxiety since age 27 and the loss of a close friend to suicide last year.In January 2017 she decided to create ‘Angelique’s Project’, a talk show on
Youtube aimed at breaking the stigma associated with depression. The project will seek to motivate and create mental and psychological awareness about the problem.“It’s also about the healing power of music and the arts and the magic of love,” Cohen explained in a news release.“Too many of us are walking around depressed, hurt, in pain. Too many people are taking their lives and we can’t understand it. Why? Because we don’t talk about it. It must stop, and we need to shatter this stigma,” she said.“My purpose is healing, and I have a relentless passion for it. I have decided to follow my path within this area in many ways, one of which is to start my own
Youtube channel where I can accomplish my goals,” she said.According to Cohen, ‘Angelique’s Project’ will have 12 episodes per season. As such, it will need a kick-start as there are various costs associated with accomplishing a professional talk show, such as personnel and equipment.“We would like for persons to have faith and believe that there is actually a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark their circumstances may be. Our mission is to allow persons to get help via others who have been in similar situations and who have successfully made it through mentors, therapists, motivational speakers, etc,” Cohen said.Cohen has been referred to as ‘the magician’ for her determination and ability to bring to the stage some of Jamaica’s finest musicians, who have contributed their talent at no cost, because they identify with the aim of her project. So far she has held three shows in the series, with each creatively showcasing a different theme. The line-ups have included Della Manley, Karen Smith, Wayne Armond, Suzanne Couch, Dr Michael Abrahams, Mijanne, Jason Worton, Donald Waugh, as well as Bent, Limonius, MacGregor, and Groskopf. The last show was held at South Beach Café April 26.“The turnout was awesome. We didn’t have enough seats,“ Cohen said.
