Where was George Nooks held?
There are conflicting reports about where popular entertainer, George Nooks was held and later arrested and charged with possession of cocaine under the Dangerous Drugs Act, Friday night.
The police force’s information arm, the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), in a news release early yesterday did not give a location where the artiste was held, but suggested that it was in the vicinity of his Kingston 6 home.“Narcotics detectives arrested and charged popular entertainer, 56-year-old George Nooks of Widcombe Heights, Kingston 6, for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act on Friday, May 5,” the report began.“Reports are that about 9:00 pm, lawmen were on operation in the community when they observed Nooks acting in a manner that arouse (d) their suspicion. He was accosted and a bag he was carrying searched; the bag was found to contain just under two ounces of cocaine. He was subsequently arrested and charged,” the news release continued, giving the impression that the mention of an “operation in the community” meant the Widcombe Heights area of Hope Pastures, St Andrew. However, other media reports stated that the man known for the popular hit
God Is Standing By, among others, was apprehended in the Duhaney Park Shopping Plaza after he was seen with a bag and, according to the police, “started to act suspiciously”, upon which Nooks allegedly threw the bag into his Mercedes Benz sport utility vehicle, which was retrieved by the law enforcers, searched, and the drug allegedly found.Although the CCU news release said that he was arrested and charged, the name of the police station was not given. However, further media reports said that the matter was handled by the Duhaney Park police in western St Andrew.Nooks, who performed as Prince Mohammed during the late 1970s and 1980s, was offered station bail in the sum of $80,000, the CCU said. He is due to face the St Andrew Parish Court on May 17.Reports that the police also seized Nooks’ vehicle could not be confirmed by the
Jamaica Observer yesterday.
