Inspirational Daley, goal-scoring hero Brown dare to believe as UWI hunt glory
Keammar Daley and Patrick Brown both believe that their team, UWI FC, can go all the way to the Red Stripe Premier League final after pulling off a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Portmore United in their first-leg semi-final at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Clarendon on Sunday.
The UWI had failed to win away to Portmore on two previous occasions this season, including their final regular season game. That 0-2 loss cost UWI the chance to be crowned regular season champions and the $1 million that comes with it.But on Sunday, the Marcel Gayle-coached team rose to the occasion, thanks largely to the efforts of both Daley and Brown.Daley, a former Reggae Boyz midfielder, was poised in midfield and his experience shone throughout the game. He took control of play after his team fell behind only five minutes and his influence helped in drawing his team level. His superlative second-half performance also ensured that his team takes a one-goal advantage into the second leg. He was later named man of the match and puts the win down to trust.“It was just the game plan. Confidence and trust, (we) trust each other, the coach trusts us and we trust him to make the right decisions and it paid off for us. We know we have a quality team and we have some young players who are very good, so we just play to our strengths,” he said. When quizzed about making the final, Daley replied: “That’s the aim and by the grace of the Almighty we are going all the way.”Brown, who scored after three minutes coming off the bench, was equally optimistic about his team’s chances after bagging his sixth goal of the campaign.“It feels good to know that you can come out with a victory at the end of the day because it’s the big stage right now and everything counts, so we have to come out here and do our best. Once you are on the bench you just have to be in the frame of mind that you can do it (when called upon).“The game was still early when they scored, (but) it’s not one half that play in football, it’s both halves so if they score one we just keep our focus and maintain our shape and continue doing what we have to do and we got back one right away,” Brown said. When asked the same question about making it to the final, the big striker said: “Why not? We came here and got a victory. The most important thing, we are at home (in the second leg) and if you check the records we have lost only two or three (matches) at home, so we just have to come and give our ‘A’ game.”It is only the first time that UWI have ventured this far in the competition in what is only their second season at the top level. Their home form has always been good and they will have to maintain it in order to turn back the challenge of last year’s beaten finalists.— Dwayne Richards
