NWA begins $71-m flood mitigation works ahead of hurricane season
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The National Works Agency (NWA) says it plans to spend just under $72 million to undertake flood mitigation works across all parishes in preparation for the start of the 2017 North Atlantic hurricane season.
NWA Manager, Communications and Customer Service, Stephen Shaw, said that the works, which are to include the cleaning of gullies and drains, de-bushing and the trimming of road-banks, are routine.Drain-cleaning activities commenced on May 1 and are expected to be completed within a month, Shaw said, adding that the focus of the programme will be on critical drains especially those located in flood prone areas.Among the areas where drain cleaning is slated to be undertaken are the Bamboo River and Seaforth drains in St Thomas, the Cooling Spring, Grant’s Gate and School House Corner drains in Portland, the Flemming’s Gully in Clarendon and the Johnson Pen drain in St Catherine.
