Richards rounding into form with big throw
World Championships shot put bronze medallist O’Dayne Richards appears to be returning to his best form after he threw over 21 metres for the first time since 2015, winning the event with an effort of 21.15m at the All-Comers Development Meet at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The Olympic Games finalist and 2014 Commonwealth Games champion has struggled with injuries in recent years, but improved on his season’s best 20.74m and moves up a few places into eighth place on the IAAF rankings.Fedrick Dacres, who still leads the world rankings in the discus throw and is mere centimetres from qualifying for the World Championships in the shot put, was second on Saturday with 20.31m, while Petersfield High schoolboy Kevin Nedrick was third with 18.43m. Nedrick’s throw is a national junior record with the adult weight implement.Dacres won the discus throw event with 62.67m, with Traves Smikle right behind him with 62.25m, while Chad Wright took third with 58.27m.Olympic Games finalist Janieve Russell ran her first 400-metre hurdles race of the season and clocked 55.41 seconds, beating Nikita Tracey (56.39), while Rhonda Whyte of Sprintec, who won her section, was third overall in 56.74 seconds.Miguel Francis of Racers TC ran 20.46 seconds (-1.0m/s) to win the 200m, running past Rasheed Dwyer in the last 60 metres as the Commonwealth Games champion clocked 20 seconds flat. Oshane Bailey was third in 20.93 seconds.Julian Forte of MVP battled a strong head wind to win the men’s 100m in 10.39 (-4.2m/s), beating Sprintec’s Chadic Hinds (10.57) with IAAF World Under-20 Championships 200m medallist Nigel Ellis third in 10.62 seconds.Gayon Evans won the women’s 100m in 11.49 (-1.0m/s) edging Shasha-Lee Forbes (11.53), followed by Natasha Morrison (11.60).
