Distance man Campbell runs national record in Massachusetts
Jamaica’s only world-class distance runner Kemoy Campbell ran a national record 7:44.90 minutes to win a 3,000m race at the Adrian Martinez Classic at Emerson Park in Concord, Massachusetts, on Thursday, the eighth-fastest in the world so far this year.
The time beat his previous best 7:53.85 minutes in the seldom-run distance for men, while placing fifth at the 14th Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston two weeks ago as he revs up his preparation for the IAAF World Championships in London later this year.Only the seven men who finished in that order in the 3,000m event at the season-opening IAAF Diamond League meeting in Doha have run faster, while American Thomas Curtin, who was second on Thursday in 7:45.11 minutes, is now ranked ninth in the world with a new personal best.Campbell holds almost all the national records and has run faster indoors, clocking 7:40.79 minutes at the Millrose Games in New York in February 2016.– Paul Reid
