St Andrew soar to front of JTA / Sagicor National Athletics Champs
Defending champions St Andrew amassed 61 points to lead after eight finals on day one of the JTA/Sagicor National Athletics Championships at the National Stadium yesterday.
Second in the standings are Portland with 48 points, followed by St Catherine 42, St Thomas 36 points, Clarendon 29, St Elizabeth 22, Kingston 15 and St Mary 13.St Andrew also lead the girls’ standing with 29 points, ahead of St Thomas 26 and Portland with 23 points. St Andrew are also on top in the boys’ section with 32 points, ahead of Portland 25 and St Catherine with 23 points.The championship continues this morning with 49 finals, starting at 10:00.Meanwhile, the Boys’ long jump open was won by Jahiem Scott of St Andrew with a distance 5.03 metres, ahead of Tarance Williams of Kingston 4.91m, and Carlington Williams with 4.93 metres.The Girls’ long jump open was won by Rasheda Samuels of St Thomas with 5.00 metres, ahead of Chelsea Eccleston of Clarendon 4.98m, and Bianca Peterkin 4.97 metres.Adrian Rumble of St Andrew was the winner of the Boys’ high jump open with a leap of 1.58 metres; Omarion Walford of St Catherine 1.46m and Delano Kennedy of Clarendon with 1.40m placed after him.Renardo Merchant of Portland captured the Boys’ shot put Open with a throw of 9.65 metres, ahead of Jazzany Lywood of St Catherine 8.53m, and Tyrick Gayle of St Andrew 8.29m.Bianca Peterkin of St Andrew won the Girls’ shot put open final with a throw of 9.06 metres, ahead of Kartia Burke of Portland 7.87m, and Rashida Dennison of St Thomas 7.53.— Gerald Reid
