Taville Henry takes gospel song title
YOUNG gospel singer Taville Henry has won his second Solo title in the Jamaica Children’s Gospel Song Competition at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in St Andrew recently.
The 11-year-old student of the St Aloysius Primary School in Kingston out-sang three other finalists in the 11- to 15-year-old Solo category at the competition’s national finals to take home the 2017 title, along with the award for Best Overall Performer. This is Henry’s second year in a row in the winners’ circle, as he took home the gold last year in the six- to 10-year-old Solo category when he was 10. Henry, who calls himself “blessed”, said he was happy to make his teachers proud for another year in a row.The competition also saw the six- to 10-year-old Solo category winner, Maylin Dillon, as another show highlight. The eight-year-old stole the show while making her teachers at the Alpha Primary School in Kingston proud.Other winners for the 2017 competition organised by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) were Alpha Primary, who took home the title for the Choir Category, six-to 10-year-old age group and Ensemble Category, 11 – 15 year old age group; the Willowdene Group of Schools for the Choir Category, 11 – 15-year-old age group; and Jessie Ripoll Primary Ensemble Category, six to 10-year-old age group.“Taville gave a really impressive performance and deserved his second-consecutive win,” said director of marketing and public relations at the JCDC, Stephen Davidson. “And Maylin really brought the house down with her solo entry.”Davidson also noted that the other winners also had the audience mesmerised to hear such big voices from small children.“Every year the national finals of the Jamaica Children’s Gospel Song Competition is one of our highlights for Child Month. We take pride in unearthing this extraordinary talent at this time. And this year we feel an extra sense of pride as this competition is also a part of the Jamaica 55 celebrations,” Davidson added.
