Jamaica Broilers make winning start in 5-a-side football
Business House Five-A-Side defending champions Jamaica Broilers made a positive start to their 2017 campaign with a come-from-behind 2-1 win in their opening game against promoted Division Two champions Seprod Limited, at the National Water Commission field on Saturday.
Second-half goals from Jason Grant in the 39th minute and Najja Biggs in the 40th+3 minutes rescued the win for the defending champions after Noval Christie had given the Division Two champions the lead one minute before the half-time break with a stunning, long-range pile driver.Grant, who also struck the Seprod woodwork twice in the first half with powerful shots, brought the teams level in the second half with another tremendous shot that lodged itself into the top right-hand corner between the upright and crossbar, outside the reach of goalkeeper Doran Morgan.Earlier, Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) President Wayne Shaw declared the season of the 60-team competition open at the gala dress parade where only 53 of the teams turned out. The dress parade was won by Restaurants Of Jamaica, with Yello second, Select Brands third, and Jamaica National fourth.Some 20 or so new teams registered to participate with UWI also returning for the new season.Teams will receive winning incentives as follows: Division One winners will receive $70,000; second place $35,000; third place $20,000; and fourth place $10,000. Division Two winners will receive $60,000; second place $30,000; third place $15,000; and fourth place $8,000. Winners of the knockout section will receive $40,000, second place $20,000.Every leading goalscorer and MVP will receive cash awards of $3,000 and also a pair of football boots from Western Sports, while for the knockout the leading goalscorer and the MVP will receive a cash prize of $5,000 each.— Hurbun Williams
