Richards edges gold at ISKA Amateur Members Association tourney
MIDDLEWEIGHT Subrina Richards historically won a third-straight International Sport Kickboxing Association Amateur Members Association title in Athens, Greece, late Friday, handing Jamaica its third gold medal of the tournament.
Richards, who won her first title in Portugal, 2015, followed by Stuttgart, Germany, last year, beat Viarouge Manon 17-16 in the final, after getting past another German, Jenny Dahlstrom, in semi-final action.Though happy with her title defence, Richards said the close final pushed her to the limit and she hoped to be better at home when Jamaica hosts the tournament next year.“It was a tough match; it was a pretty close match. I am just looking forward to 2018 when we are hosting. I will have the opportunity to defend my title in front of my fellow Jamaicans,” she said.Coach Jason McKay said Richards was not at peak fitness but still good enough to beat her European rivals.“Though it was close, she was only at about 80 per cent fitness, but I knew there was no one in the European confederation who can seriously challenge her in points fighting,” he remarked.Meanwhile, the Jamaicans were eyeing a fourth gold on yesterday’s final day, with microweight Sheckema Cunningham hunting a second title after winning continuous sparring on Thursday.Akino Lindsay gave Jamaica a first gold on last Wednesday’s opening day.
