Saints deliver rare defeat on All-Stars
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Champions Catherine Hall All-Stars were beaten for the first time this season on Saturday after their second-half rally fell just short against Holland Saints in their Western Basketball Association’s iCool/iDrade Elite Basketball League game at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
Despite a combined 44 points from Dwayne Johns and Vaughn Corke, Catherine Hall All-Stars fell 70-71 to Holland Saints who avenged their earlier 60-55 loss.Also on Saturday, Granville Jaguars edged closer to the leaders after beating Inner-City Avalanche 60-46 thanks to a strong third quarter where they stretched a one-point half-time lead to a 20-point lead.Two more games will be played today at the Montego Bay Cricket Club where Cricket Club Knights will face Muschett Falcons, starting at 6:15 pm followed by Lucea Flames against Montego Bay Hoopers at 8:00 pm.On Saturday, player/coach Ricardo Brooks led from the front with 24 points for Holland Saints in their big win as they led by four points (21-17) after the first quarter, increased their margin to eight points (39-31) at half- time and were up by nine points (57-48) going into the fourth quarter.Catherine Hall stormed back with a big fourth quarter, outscoring Holland by eight points (22-14), but that was not enough.Aldane Anderson also scored 15 points for Holland and Shavaughn Reid got 14 as Martin Belnavis scored five points and grabbed 14 rebounds.Johns scored 24 points for Catherine Hall, Corke got 20 points and 19 rebounds as well as eight assists, while Craig Dorman scored 13 points.Despite fielding just five players, Jaguars wore down a pesky Inner-City Avalanche team, beating them for the second time this season, outscoring them by 15 points 37-22 over the second half of the game.– Paul Reid
