She’s A Maneater raises confidence levels before Derby
All eyes were on She’s A Maneater as many, including her connections, wanted to see and evaluate the 1000 Guineas winner who was racing for the first time since picking up an injury on the exercise track shortly after her Classic triumph. The race on Saturday was also her final run ahead of participation in the Jamaica Derby on June 24.
Running in the top-rated Open Allowance event against five rivals,
She’s A Maneater showed no ill effects of her injury as she easily won by four-and-a-half lengths in a decent time of 1:38.2 over a mile (1,600m).Her trainer Wayne DaCosta believes that this run by the filly has raised confidence levels going into the Jamaica Derby, where
She’s A Maneater and with her stable companion,
Fearless Samurai, are the only remaining Triple Crown hopefuls.“The performance by
She’s A Maneater, I thought was very good. She was able to go with
Another Bullet down the backstretch and when she was asked to quicken a furlong and a half (300m) out she responded really well.“Well, we certainly got a boost from this performance here today (Saturday) because up until this run everything was doubtful. Even though,
She’s A Maneater worked really well coming into the race, all those workouts were easy gallops. We needed to see her in a race to find out exactly how she would perform on a race day in active competition and she answered all our questions as she certainly gave us a great performance today (Saturday),” DaCosta said while confirming yesterday that the filly had come home in good condition and was lively and eating well. The champion trainer said that there should be a problem for his
Natural Selection –
Ahwhofah offspring getting the Derby distance of 12 furlongs (2,400m).“The Jamaica Derby is now three weeks away and so I probably will give her two comfortable gallops heading into the race and take it from there.“
She’s A Maneater is bred to get the distance. Her sire
Natural Selection stays forever and most of his offspring do, so if she stays sound, I don’t think we will have a problem of her running a good race in the Derby,” he opined. When asked who is better,
She’s A Maneater or
Fearless Samurai, DaCosta was very guarded in his response.“Don’t have a clue. They are two top class horses, who if injuries don’t come into play will certainly reach the top level. They are two nice racehorses,” he said.
She’s A Maneater, ridden by Omar Walker, was off to a good start and raced in second position behind
Another Bullet (Odeen Edwards). Approaching the half mile (800m), the top two-year-old filly from last season challenged
Another Bullet for the lead.Turning for home,
Another Bullet had a slight advantage but
She’s A Maneater found an extra burst of speed and powered past the leader in the last furlong (200m), lengthening her strides to the wire for a comfortable victory in the end.
Another Bullet just held on for second money from the fast-finishing
Hover Craft, under Jevvanne Erwin, in the three-year-old and upward event.
