Anderson, Morgan dedicate Premier League title to fans
When Ranike Anderson fired Arnett Gardens level in the 55th minute of the Red Stripe Premier League final on Monday night, it brought back the ‘Junglists’ into the contest after they had missed glaring goalscoring opportunities in the first half.
Portmore United had taken the lead from as early as the second minute when Maalique Foster poked them in front. A missed penalty by the usually reliable Fabian Reid late in the first half meant that Arnett Gardens trailed at half-time in a game in which they should have been at least on level terms.Ten minutes into the second half, the big defender, who had remained upfront after a corner kick, responded quickly when the ball fell to him inside the box and hooked home the equaliser. He then ran off to celebrate in front of his adoring fans. When asked if he had envisioned scoring in such an important game, Anderson was honest in saying no.“No, I didn’t expect that, but it came so eventually I had to just do what I did. When it hit the back of the net I was super excited, I just wanted to celebrate with the fans.”The 29-year-old said that the goal gave him the belief that his team could go on and win the game.“From we scored we knew the fans, the twelfth man, would be behind us, so we knew we would be on top at that period of the game.”His teammate Marvin Anderson scored with a thunderbolt strike ten minutes later and that was the moment that the game was decided, according to the hard-tackling defender.“When Marvin scored we knew Arnett couldn’t lose again from we come in front. I was excited and it felt wonderful to see the kind of crowd support we had tonight,” he proclaimed.Morgan, who was named man-of-the-match, is no stranger to winning the league with Arnett Gardens, as he was a member of the victorious team two years ago. He was, however, even more pleased with this victory than the previous one.“It is a tremendous feeling, not only to be the person to deliver, but also the person to not let down the fans. At half time, individually, coach said I was having a good game and that I should continue taking it to the wing back and cut inside and shoot the ball and that is what I did.”Like his teammate Anderson, Morgan said he knew that his goal was the defining moment of the final.“When I scored I said to myself, this is it now, this is it. This is what I want because I know that second goal took the sting out of them (Portmore).Thousands of Arnett Gardens fans had packed into the stadium on Monday night, and the former St George’s College Manning Cup star, dedicated the win to the loyal supporters“I said it throughout the season that the fans deserve it because we went through hell, we go through no money at all and they still stood by us, so we have to dedicate this one to them,” he concluded.Arnett Gardens have now drawn level on five titles with Portmore United, Santos FC, and Tivoli Gardens, and their coach Jerome Waite has now won his fourth Premier League title at the helm.
