Maroon confab, festivity launch

THE launch of the 2017 Charles Town Maroon International Conference and Celebration takes place tonight at the Redbones Blues Café in New Kingston, starting at 7:00 pm.

The two-day event begins on Friday, June 23, with the annual Ancestor Quao Day Celebration at the Asafu Yard in Charles Town, Portland.Under the theme ‘Maroons and the African Diaspora: Learning From The Past, Looking To The Future’, the celebration will feature cultural performances by Nadine Sutherland, Pam Hall, Mutabaruka, Cari-Folk Singers, African Drummers and Dancers, maypole dance, and other activities highlighting the Maroons’ heritage.— Basil Walters
