Improved lighting for Perkins Boulevard
THE Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) is collaborating with the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to improve street lighting on Perkins Boulevard in the vicinity of Meadowbrook Estates.
The KSAMC said the numerous night accidents on Perkins Boulevard led to its request to the JPS to install 20 additional LED lamps in the area.
The JPS subsequently informed KSAMC CEO Robert Hill that installation of the 20 additional LED lamps would require an extension of the company’s secondary circuit on Perkins Boulevard. The council was then asked to make a non-refundable contribution of $850,987.38 towards the extension of the secondary circuit.
On Tuesday, the council’s meeting approved a motion for $850, 987.38 from the Equalisation Fund to be given to the JPS to extend the secondary circuit to facilitate the installation of the 20 LED lamps.
Duane Smith, Jamaica Labour Party Councillor (Chancery Hall division), who moved the resolution, said that the darkness of the area at night concerned both citizens and the police. He said that bodies had been found in the area in recent times.
JLP councillor Vernon McLeod (Havendale Division), who seconded the resolution, said that numerous people used Perkins Boulevard as a route for exercising early in the mornings. “The darkness made residents feel unsafe,” he added.
