She’s A Maneater hunts Triple Crown greatness
She's A Maneater insearch of Triple Crownglory in today'sJamaica St Leger.

She’s A Maneater hunts Triple Crown greatness

What can become one of the most memorable and enduring events in the lives of two venerable horsemen — owner Winston Kong and trainer Wayne DaCosta — will unfold with the 91st running of the Jamaica St Leger at Caymanas Park today.

Super filly She’s A Maneater is the fulcrum of the native-bred three-year-old Triple Crown series glory, and is on course for victory in the final leg of the Classics, the Jamaica St Leger. The Leger, which carries a purse of $4 million, will run over 10 furlongs (2,000m).

According to trainer DaCosta, the super filly came out of her races in good condition and is again ready for battle.

Therefore, following up on her 1,000 Guineas and Jamaica Derby Classic winning performances, She’s A Maneater with victory in the Jamaica St Leger will see Winston Kong joining a select few to have both bred and owned a Triple Crown winner.

The victory will also rekindle fond memories for trainer DaCosta, who saddled his first Triple Crown winner 21 years ago with War Zone in 1996.

Winning a second Triple Crown title here will put DaCosta second to Philip Feanny on the list of Triple Crown winners. The 14-time champion trainer Feanny has so far led the way with Triple Crown winners in five wins — Lui Chie Poo in 1988, The Viceroy in 1989, Milligram in 1992, I’msatified in 2000, and the first filly to do so at Caymanas Park, Simply Magic in 2002. The first filly to ever win the Triple Crown in Jamaica is Money Moon, and that was in 1937.

Even with the distance reduced, She’s A Maneater has to be mindful of three basic opponents in Sotomayor, Market Force, and her stablemate Fearless Samurai. All have looked lively in their preparation gallops to go in search of something more in their three-year-old Classic season than being bridesmaids.

Despite her ease of victory in the longer Derby trip over 12 furlongs (2,400m), it could now prove reckless for top jockey Omar Walker to become complacent aboard She’s A Maneater going a trip shorter at 10 furlongs (2,000m), knowing full well that Sotomayor has won over shorter strips in the past going seven furlongs (1,400m) and a mile (1,600m).

What should also draw some attention on the card are the running of the $1.3-million Eros Trophy, a Graded Stakes event over seven furlongs (1,400m), and the $900,000 Mark My Word maiden, two-year-old event over three furlongs (600m).

In the Eros Trophy, the race should be decided from among Bigdaddykool, Perfect Neighbour, Brawn, and Campesino, while the Anthony Nunes-trained Apollo Bay should run away with the Mark My Word event.
