DOUBLE FOR SPENCER CHUNG, KING D SCORCHER
The glamour years of training Typewriter and St Cecelia might be over for trainer Spencer Chung but every now and again, Chung reminds the racing public that he is still around and is still capable of producing winners. On Saturday, Chung saddled two winners, Killer Bee, following the disqualification of Malachi and King D in the last race. The performance by King D ( Blue Pepsi Lodge – Fight For Pleasure) probably slipped the notice of racegoers especially after the euphoria of She’s A Maneater winning the Triple Crown. Racing over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course, the chestnut colt, drawn ideally on the outside, impaled rivals winning by close to four lengths in a very fast 57.3 seconds on a track which most observers had as being slow on the day. The hope now is for King D who recorded splits of 22.2 x 44.2 to carry the form from the five straight to the round course. Good to see Spencer back in the winners’ enclosure.
ONEIL MULLINGS ON SONG
It is fair to say that jockey Oneil Mullings is enjoying quite a good patch in the saddle of late. Mullings rode a quiet double on Saturday after winning the first race on the St Leger card on the two-year-old Exhilarate and then closed proceedings on King D. While not appearing on the top 10 list of riders for the year, Mullings who has been around for a while now, has ridden 15 winners this season inclusive of the two on Saturday. The work in the mornings is obviously paying off for this journeyman jockey.
