Reid takes on Frenemy
ALL it takes is a minute with actress Audrey Reid to have you doubling over with laughter. She has been winning over theatre-goers with her many roles since her debut in the early 1990s.
The Jamaica Observer recently caught up with the 47-year-old, who is cast in Frenemy.
“The production centres on the relations between Willie and Freddie who have been friends from infant school. They shared everything and defended each other…or so it seems. On several occasions, the friendship has been tested and survived until a most damning revelation,” she said.
Frenemy, written and directed by Oliver Samuels, sees Reid playing the character of Rose, girlfriend of Willie’s son, Carl, who is played by Dennis Titus. The production also sees the reunion of of veteran actors Oliver Samuels and Volier Johnson, who play the roles of Freddie and Willie, respectively.
Lakeisha Ellison completes the cast.
Frenemy, which opened on June 30, is currently showing at the Jamaica Shopping Club Theatre (formerly Green Gables Theatre) on Cargill Avenue in St Andrew.
Reid, who has played more than 30 characters, has been cast in numerous productions such as Me and Mi Kru, Almost Heaven, Obeah Wedding, Higglers, Some Like It Hot, Boy Blue, Irie Neighbour, Con Man, Scandal, Strength Of A Woman, It’s A Dancehall Ting, and Wicked Bitches.
“I have had many successes in stage plays, most of which was done in the United Kingdom. But my biggest success to date was playing the lead role in Dancehall Queen,” she said.
Dancehall Queen is a 1997 independent Jamaican film which also starred Carl Davis, Cherine Anderson, and Paul Campbell. It was directed by Rick Elgood and Don Letts.
Reminiscing on her career, Reid said she has no regrets.
“I’m doing what I do best. Being an actress gives me the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures. The joy and laughter my work brought to many, the love and appreciation from the fans are priceless. I am also being paid for what I love and I wouldn’t change it for the world,” she said.
