Johnny’s comedy series
ITS move to a new location at 100 on Hope Road in St Andrew on Tuesdays hasn’t diminished the entertainment value of The Johnny Live Comedy Bar series.
At its last staging, scores of patrons turned out to get their weekly slice of humour, thanks to performers Christopher “Johnny” Daley, Dr Michael Abrahams and host Dufton “Duffy” Shepherd.
Prior to the big guns, open mic performers including Kool FM’s Richard Reid, and Jean Paul and Christopher Larmond were put to the test in warming up the audience.
Host and comedian Shepherd, who has shown immense growth in his performance, was outstanding. On a night when good music flowed with food and drink, patrons ate up his every utterance.
With a wide range of topics, mostly about relationships, current affairs (including the Audley Show cellphone debacle), and American politics, patrons could hardly contain themselves.
Daley, who doubles as the series promoter, continues to demonstrate why he is regarded among the top tier in the business. His break down on what women expect in relationships was well-received.
Abrahams was also on point and delivered another of his memorable sets.
“We’re extremely excited to what is happening where comedy in Jamaica is concerned,” said Daley. “Clearly comedy is an entertainment genre and Jamaicans are supportive of it. The eat/drink concept is perfect for stand-up comedy, and the support has been overwhelming. We’re seeing uptown, downtown, round town, the demographic is across the board.”
The Johnny Live Comedy Bar began earlier this year at the End Zone in Portmore, St Catherine. Due to the overwhelming crowd support, the event was relocated to 100 in Kingston.
“Having built up an energy, we decided to look at Kingston and so far, it’s been a great partnership with 100. We have packed houses week after week. This is our seventh week, we close next Tuesday (July 25) for a short break and resume in September,” said Daley.
