PNP committee approves internal election for Portia’s seat
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Executive Council (NEC) of the People’s National Party yesterday ratified the resolution to proceed with the recommended selection conference to elect a candidate to replace former party leader Portia Simpson Miller in South Western St Andrew.
There was a unanimous vote supporting the resolution.
The PNP, in a subsequent press release, said Councillor of the Norman Gardens Divison Angela Brown-Burke will challenge Audrey Smith-Facey, Councillor of the Payne Land Division on July 30, in a bid to determine the party’s standard-bearer for the upcoming bi-election in that constituency.
In a brief statement supporting the resolution, Party President Peter Phillips urged the NEC to stand for what is right for the party and the country and support the resolution as it gives honour to all involved and offers the best hope for democracy.
The NEC is the PNP’s highest decision making body outside its Annual Conference.
