Sandy Bay, Grand Palladium for Major League final
LUCEA, Hanover — Former champions Sandy Bay FC and first-time finalists Grand Palladium will meet this afternoon to decide the champions of the Hanover Football Association Charley’s JB Rum/Captains Bakery and Grill Major League at Watson Taylor Park in Lucea, set to start at 3:00 pm.
In addition to the title, today’s winner will book the fourth and final promotion place to the Western Confederation Super League, joining Catherine Hall of St James, Roaring River of Westmoreland, and Harmony FC of Trelawny.
Sandy Bay will be in their second final of the season after losing to Super Star YC in the mid-season play-offs, while Grand Palladium will be seeking their first title at this level.
Grand Palladium shocked Super Star YC 3-1 in overtime, in their return-leg semi-final last week, for a 4-2 aggregate win after the first leg ended 1-1 — the same score at full-time on Wednesday before Damion Wynter became the hero with two goals in extra time.
Earlier, Sandy Bay FC had booked their place in today’s title decider with a 6-2 aggregate win over upstarts Johnson Town, and will go into today’s game with the psychological edge after having beaten Grand Palladium 3-0 in their only meeting this season.
Both teams will be ready for the game, however, as they were pushed to the limit in the semi-final round, which was played over two legs.
Sandy Bay led 3-0 from their first leg against Johnson Town, but saw their deficit cut to just one goal early in the second leg before restoring order by scoring three goals.
Grand Palladium, who had lost 2-3 to Super Star in the regular season, drew the first leg, but trailed 2-1 on aggregate early in the return-leg, rallying to force extra time, where they prevailed.
