UCJ accredits Midland Bible Institute theology, psychology degrees
People wanting to pursue higher studies in theology or psychology now have an additional option with the recent accreditation by the University Council of Jamaica of the first degree programmes offered by Midland Bible Institute (MBI).
Located on the outskirts of May Pen, Clarendon, MBI is committed to providing students with holistic education in a Christian environment that fosters academic excellence, biblical integration, as well as personal and professional development for service to one another and the world.
Acting Principal and Academic Dean Dr Shonna Leigh recommends the Bachelor of Arts in Theology programme to people preparing to work in occupations or capacities including pastor, evangelist, Christian education director, religious knowledge teacher, counsellor, youth worker and cross-cultural missionary.
“The overall goal of the theology programme is to produce people of integrity with a clear biblical worldview and leadership skills anchored in the knowledge of God,” Dr Leigh states.
The acting principal says the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology programme is designed to offer students the opportunity to study the discipline from a Christian worldview. She points out that psychology, true to its origin (from the Greek word “psyche”), is the study of the soul, and contends that no worldview other than Christianity has truer insight into the spiritual realm.
Dr Leigh describes the psychology degree programme as the “gateway” to a variety of career pursuits, a medium that allows one to make a difference in people’s lives, and a “great way” to learn more about oneself and others.
Entry requirements to the four-year degree programmes at MBI are five passes at CSEC, GCE, City & Guilds Level 3, or equivalent, including English Language and mathematics, or a teaching diploma. Students have the option of selecting a minor and must complete a minimum 124 credit hours to earn the degree. The options for minors are theology, pastoral care, guidance and counselling.
Other programme offerings at MBI include:
• Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Behaviour Development
• Associate Degree in Psychology or Theology
• Diploma in Psychology or Theology
• Certificate in Ministry and Leadership
• Continuing Education Short Courses
