Anderson triple leads Jamaican sweep at Marquis Downs
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (CMC) — Jockey Jodeien Anderson shone with a triple to lead a Jamaican domination of the seven-race card at Marquis Downs here Saturday.
Riding at the western Canada racetrack, Anderson snatched wins in race two with Envoy to Benghazi, in race four with Wilko Whiskey and in race seven with Macoumba Cat.
Not to be left out, fellow Jamaican Neville Stephenson posted a brace, capturing race one with favourite Aunt Hilda and race five with another favourite Knife Fork Zoom.
Victories by Garfield Gordon and Carlton Malcolm ensured a clean sweep of the card for the Jamaicans. Gordon paired with 3-1 chance Bambazonki to win race three in a front-running effort while Malcolm combined with odds-on bet Fungo to score in race six over 6-1/2 furlongs.
Stephenson tops the standings with 16 wins, two clear of Trinidadian Naim Samaroo in second with another Trinidadian Shawn Samuel third also on 14.
Anderson lies fifth on seven wins.
It was his performance, however, that made all the headlines. He kicked off his success in a seven-furlong trip, guiding four-year-old bay filly Envoy to Benghazi to a 4-1/2 length over the three-year-old and upwards.
Going off at odds of 5-1, the pair chased Rose Kid, duelled before grabbing the lead and pulling away in the stretch.
His victory aboard 7-1 chance Wilko Whiskey was even more dominant as he made all the running with the four-year-old gelding over six furlongs to trounce the three-year-old and upwards by 4-3/4 lengths.
And Anderson brought the curtain down on the programme when he teamed up with three-year-old gelding Macoumba Cat to to slam the three-year-old and upward maidens by six lengths, in a six-furlong trip.
