BGLC TROPHY – The day a dream became real
August 1 is celebrated as Emancipation Day but for trainer Steven Todd the day means much more. It was on August 1 2016, that he witnessed his charge Dreamcometrue win the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) Trophy with the added fillip of equalling the stakes record of 1:05.3 for the five-and-a-half furlong (1,100m) event.
This year’s edition of the BGLC Trophy along with many more competitive races is set for Tuesday, August 1 (Emancipation Day) at Caymanas Park.
“It was a very good performance by Dreamcometrue to win the BGLC Trophy race last year. I mean, it was superb and I was proud of her. She showed a lot of class when she won that race last year but, unfortunately, she has been injured this year.
“We had to put her down and just brought her back for training. She will not run in this year’s race, but it was a really good feeling winning the BGLC Trophy. It is a big race and it is a race people look forward to each year and winning it will always be wonderful,” Todd told The Complete Racing Guide.
Jockey O’Brien White held Dreamcomtrue behind the early pace set by Force De Jour (Bebeto Harvey), Mom’s Student (Dane Dawkins) and Brawn, the mount of Aaron Chatrie, approaching the half-mile.
Dreamcometrue, who hugged the inside rails, got a clear run at the top of the lane and drew alongside Mom’s Student and Brawn for a brief moment, before the bay filly hit another gear and moved away from rivals in the last furlong (200m) to score by two lengths in the Open Allowance event for three-year-olds and upwards. Mom’s Student finished second ahead of the tiring F orce De Jour and Brawn in the small field of six runners.
Brawn actually finished third, but was disqualified for causing interference to Force De Jour shortly after turning for home.
“She is fast, she has speed, but she can also sit off the pace and do her running late. I told the jockey to get her out of the starting gates good and see how the race goes at first. If she can sit close to the leaders then sit close, but if not, make her come off the pace and attack them up the lane.
“To be honest, the win by Dreamcometrue was expected. She was training very well for the race as well,” said Todd.
