Talented Tony K gets nod in Reggae Trophy feature
The Reggae Trophy, where a paltry field of five Graded Stakes runners will match strides going over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course for a purse of $1.3 million, is the lone trophy race on an 11-race card at Caymanas Park today .
However, despite the small field, the Reggae Trophy event will be full of speed from start to finish, and if all runners live up to expectation, the record for the distance, which has stood since 2006, could change legs.
The three-year-olds and upward event, which is headed by reigning Horse of the Year Seeking My Dream, will be no walkover race for any of the five hopefuls. With the fleet-footed Talented Tony K, the improving Gary Glitter and King D, and then the closing speed of Campesino, it should be a very competitve event.
Both Seeking My Dream and Campesino will bear the brunt of the weight allotment at 126 lbs (57.0kg) and 120 lbs (54.5.0kg), respectively, and both are expected to put in their best work late in the event.
Talented Tony K with a mere 110 lbs (50.0kgs) and Wesley Henry in the saddles, will be very hard to beat in a race of this nature and is given the edge to complete a hat-trick of wins. His last effort over the distance was a good 59.1 seconds, beating Poker Star and King D comfortably under 126 lbs (57.0kgs).
King D returned to clock a quick 57.3 seconds over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course, and although now up in class, he should run a good race without actually winning. Gary Glitter, to be ridden by Ameth Robles, should also run a good race.
The return of the once mighty Typewriter in an Overnight Allowance event should attract some attention.
Though he may not be the force of yesteryear, Typewriter will be taking on a manageable field of 12 opponents over the distance of seven and a half furlongs (1,500m) for a purse of $1 million.
A many-time winner of the Superstakes, the former Horse Of The Year, who is trained by Spencer Chung, has not visited the winner’s enclosure since winning the Nigel Nunes Memorial Trophy over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) on August 29, 2015.
After that winning effort, Typewriter’s injury took a toll on the gelding and he was given a break from December of 2015 to October of 2016, when he returned to the track and failed to ignite any sparks in his three starts.
In his first start over a mile (1,600m) he was beaten by a head into second place by Blue Dixie. His failure to figure prominently in his next two races of the Gold Cup and the Superstakes saw Typewriter being put down for further retooling until today, an eight-month break.
Typewriter will face some very fit horses, which include: Dwayne Star, Soy El Senor, Montegonian, Lord Equus, and the enigmatic Prolific Princess.
