Club Ville, Cambridge United take early lead in St James Div 2 semis
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Club Ville took a 1-0 lead over Rose Mount FC in their first leg of the St James Football Association Guardian Group Division Two semi-finals at the UDC field on Saturday.
Omar Shaw’s powerful header just before half-time was the difference between the teams seeking a spot in the final, as well as an automatic berth in the Division One competition next season.
The game was played in wet and muddy underfoot conditions after a short but heavy shower just before kick-off.
Shaw, a brother to national senior team coach Theodore Whitmore, headed a corner powerfully past the Rose Mount goalkeeper in the 41st minute.
A day earlier Cambridge United had taken a two-goal lead over Ibero Star FC in their first-leg semi-finals, winning 3-1 in a game also played at the UDC field.
Cambridge United led 3-0 before Ibero Star managed to pull a goal back and cut the deficit to two goals going into the return leg.
Anthony Brown, Obrien Bent and Jermaine Francis gave Cambridge United a 3-0 lead before Garel Gooden pulled one back for Ibero Star.
