DENNIS LEE A WINNER
It may have been a mere $180,000 claiming event, but the win by Clearly Ours over six furlongs (1,200 metres) in the second event on Tuesday’s 10-race Emancipation Day card came with significance.
The victory by the seven-year-old bay mare ( Storm Craft – Hear Me Clearly) under the guidance of champion jockey Omar Walker provided trainer Dennis Lee with only his second winner of the year.
“I always knew he would win. He suffered some problems and backed out at the four-furlong marker, but I was confident that he would run on again and he got up just in time,” Lee recalled.
“I am happy with the win; one of the problems is that I can’t get claimers, so I have to work with what I have. This is the first one in a long time as it is not easy to get claimers because you have 40 and 50 claims going in for a horse, so I just have to take my time and work my way up,” he added.
Clearly Ours covered the six-furlong journey in 1:17.3, winning by three-quarter-of-a-length ahead of Royal Girl (Anthony Thomas) and Princess Brianna (D A Thomas). The splits were 23.2 and 48.1.
NO BLINKERS – DON’T BLUSH BABE WINS JAMAICA 55
The Norman Palmer-conditioned Don’t Blush Babe and jockey Wesley ‘Callaloo’ Henry romped the running of the Jamaica 55 Trophy on Tuesday’s 10-race Emancipation Day card at Caymanas Park.
It was a timely performance from the three-year-old bay filly ( Twilight Time – Hishi Blossom) in the Restricted Allowance event over six furlongs (1,200 metres) and one that must have given her trainer, who is off the island, a lot of joy.
Going a half-furlong shorter on last, Don’t Blush Babe, running in the blinkers, weakened out of contention.
Running from the number two draw, “Callaloo”, sent the 5-2 chance in front for a post-to-post win in a steady 1:15.3 with splits of 23.1 and 46.2.
“Last week she was in the blinkers and she showed the speed but she didn’t maintain it, so this time we took it off. I tried to relax her as much as I could and then asked her to run in the straight and she did the rest,” Henry said.
She finished three-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Vice Royalty (Ameth Robles) and favourite Earth Angel (Omar Walker).
