Hair am I
When it comes to natural hair, Hair am I Beauty Concepts at Salon Exquisite has made its mark. Hair am I owner Melesia Roberts is an expert in locs and protective styles, which she recommends to give hair a break from harsh chemical treatments. Consider hitting pause on the relaxers, ladies, there’s another way to let loose this summer!
Easy, breezy, beautiful — that’s what Roberts delivers to her customers who come in for locs, faux locs, and canerows. “Locs is taking over,” Roberts tells Under the Dryer (UTD). “Relaxed hair requires a lot of maintenance and I’m seeing clients getting tired of the upkeep.” With the harshness of relaxing chemicals, it’s no wonder there’s been an re-emergence of interest in natural hair. The natural hair movement has also gained strength as a protest against the idealised beauty standard of Caucasian hair.
Locs lover Sashay Scott says she’s seen tremendous growth since she locked her hair. “It’s just so much easier!” Scott confirms. Roberts adds, “One of the great things about the upkeep of faux locs is that a little wear and tear can add to the style.” A little boho chic is sure to bode well for the end-of-summer party season!
And it’s not just for the ladies! Performance artist Paul Newman has had locs for 10 years and can’t see himself ever going back. With his hectic schedule he didn’t have time to continuously go to the barber. “My hair is so low-maintenance now,” says Newman.
Commitment-phobes, rest easy, for those not ready for something long-term there are faux locs. Fake hair is wrapped around strands of natural hair to give the full effect without all the wait.
Feeling blue? Great, so are we! Roberts recommends adding a strand or two of colour to liven up hair for the summertime. “Locs are also great for hair embellishments,” she adds. UTD can’t wait to get our hands on some of the gold accessories she expertly wove into customer Dantae Roberts’ faux locs.
For upkeep Roberts recommends the Jamaican Mango and Lime product line, as well as black castor oil for moisture. For shine and hold she uses ORS Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil natural sheen spray.
