Girlz responded well to recovery session, says physio
Villa Beach , St Vincent and the Grenadines — After their commanding 10-0 victory against St Kitts and Nevis in their first game in the CONCACAF Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-17 Women’s qualifiers on Friday, the young Reggae Girlz had a recovery session yesterday and, according to physiotherapist Ashauana Davis, the girls responded well.
Giselle Washington (fifth and 22nd minutes), Jody Brown (seventh minute), Monique Perrier (37th and 41st minutes), Rochell Gray (54th and 90th+ minutes), Christina Salmon (76th and 79th), and Jaden Roberts (90th minute) got on the scorecard for the victors at the Arnos Vale sports complex in Kingstown.
The girls had their recovery session in the pool at the Beachcombers Hotel in Villa Beach, where the team is staying. The squad went through several stretching routines to get back their full strength after the fatigue and cramps endured from three days of travelling.
The Jamaicans, who were originally set to arrive in St Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday, ended up getting here late on Thursday night. That meant they had six hours to rest and prepare for their encounter on Friday.
A few of the players showed signs of soreness but Davis said that was temporary, as every player was feeling the after-effects from the journey.
“We did several different types of stretches. Say you want to stretch the quads, you go in the opposite direction how they work, so you try to do movements. it is nothing fancy, but we have to recover the girls.
“So we have them swinging the legs, stretching the quads and hamstring — depending on the direction that you move or stretch it in — and it was really good. For some of them, because of their age, the flexibility was not how we wanted it to be, but they did well and they managed up to it.
“Pretty much we don’t want to do anything strenuous with them because of the short time we have with them in-between games, but what the recovery session does was to relax the muscles. It also provided some amount of resistance but not to put any strain on the muscles, and also the water lessens body weight so you don’t have too much body weight working with; and I mean it was fun for them as well,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
After the half-hour recovery session, Davis said that the young Reggae Girlz are ready for their final assignment today against hosts St Vincent and the Grenadines.
“Yes, I think so. I mean if we were able to go through a hectic travel arrangement and still perform that well on Friday, despite a little cramps and thing, I think that they are pretty much ready for tomorrow.
“That was why we designed and set up today (yesterday) to be very light and more restful, giving the girls as much time as possible to rest. Rest is important and I am expecting them to do well tomorrow (today),” Davis said.
