Muir, Nelson on the boil
Jamaican jockeys, Shamaree Muir and Dane Nelson, continued their good form in Canada when they combined to win six races over the weekend, with Muir landing two major Stakes wins on the 12-race Canadian Derby card at the Northlands Park racetrack in Edmonton on Saturday.
Muir won the 47th running of the CAN$75,000 City of Edmonton Distaff over one and one-sixteenth of a mile on the dirt aboard the Rick Hedge-trained Tara’s Way.
Muir sent Tara’s Way to the lead with two furlongs remaining in the event, and although shortening a bit in the lane, the filly had done enough to hold the Nelson-ridden Quality Lane at bay by a length. The winning time was 1:46.34.
Muir had previously guided Sir Bronx to victory in the CAN$50,000 Timely Ruckus Stakes over six and one-half furlongs on the dirt, also for trainer Hedge. Muir had to pull out all the stops to get the better of the Nelson-ridden Private Money Game by half-a-length in 1:17.48.
“Wow, what can I say? It is truly a great feeling to win two big races on the same day. I mean, I have been putting in the work and I have been riding well too. Every time you win a Stakes race, the feeling is always going to be good; I am happy and I thank the people who are supporting me,” said Muir, who had one winner on Friday – Teyan’sbestwilko for trainer Tim Rycroft.
Nelson, who had two winners on the Friday programme – Mythical Warrior for trainer Rodney Haynes and He’s No Saint for trainer Tom Rycroft, could only manage one winner on Saturday. Nelson steered Impulsive Buy to victory in a claiming race for owner and trainer Al Hanson.
Nelson finished a close third aboard Double Bear by a length in the big one – the CAN$150,000 Northlands Park Canadian Derby over one and three-eighths of a mile on the dirt. The race was won by Rico Walcott aboard Chief Know It All.
