Jamaican craft delegation at CARIFESTA happy for govt support
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Jamaican craftsmen and fashion designers have voiced appreciation for the exposure gained through the Caribbean Arts Festival (CARIFESTA) being held in Barbados.
“I am happy for the exposure and for the new markets that my designs will potentially be introduced to through this CARIFESTA experience,” said fashion designer Paula Hurlock, as she beamed with delight after showcasing her designs at the Grand Market Fashion at the weeklong CARIFESTA.
Fellow designers, Kenea Linton and Ayana Dixon expressed similar sentiments as they too have been showing their designs at CARIFESTA.
Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, organised for assistance to be given to eleven Jamaican artisans who had an interest or were invited to CARIFESTA this year, according to a release from the ministry.
Each booth space was paid for by the ministry “in an effort to provide the much needed assistance that our craft vendors, fashion designers and hair and skin product specialists need to push their businesses,” Grange said.
In addition to Jamaican craft and designs, Reggae music was featured at the Bay Street Esplanade. Veteran performer Ernie Smith and the all-female Band Adahzeh performed at the venue. Comedians Ity and Fancy Cat and Johnny Daley also performed.
