Why I love horse racing so much
Editor’s note — Young Derek Brandt almost always accompanies his parents to Caymanas Park where his obvious love for horses is readily observed. When the young man was asked to express his thoughts on horses and horse racing; and permission was granted by his parents, he responded quickly and penned the following article.
My name is Derek Ethan Brandt and I am 10 years old. I love horse racing for three main reasons: my family connections, my mentors who inspire me in the sport, and the thrills of the sport.
My great grandmother, Flossy McNeil, for whom there is a cup race, was the first one in the family to become involved in horse racing. She never missed a race day in over 30 years. Continuing the family tradition were Grandpa and Grandma Brandt. Grandpa Brandt owned horses including Memory Gem, Twinkling Star and Orion. My great grandpa Lester Delapenha owned racehorses including a Derby winner named Master Jack. My family have owned and bred horses like Captain Bligh, Colonel Klink, Hogan’s Hero, and currently Houdini’s Magic, and my father is also a part-owner of Capturemyship.
There are some people involved in the sport whom I admire. These people include Dr Paul Wright, Brian “Spuddy” Rickman, Anthony “Baba” Nunes and my own grandpa, the late Lindy Delapenha, who everyone knows was a former racing commentator and analyst. These people inspire me and I have looked up to them ever since I have known them.
The last of the three reasons is the thrills one gets from the sport of horse racing. When I say the thrills, I mean like watching my horse win a race, especially a big race; listening to Dr Paul Wright make funny sounds during a race; or hearing “Spuddy” and his legendary calling of the races. Even watching other great horses run is a great thrill.
My daddy gave us the best treat ever when he took us in January to the Pegasus World Cup in Florida. I got to see Arrogate, California Chrome, Keen Ice, and Hall of Famer Mike Smith — all in one day!
These are the reasons why I love horses and horse racing so much. I have one last thing to say and that is… “If you’re not involved in horse racing, half of your life is missing.”
