Garvey bust at UWI replaced
ST ANDREW, Jamaica — The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona has honoured its commitment to replace the bust of National Hero Marcus Garvey, but supporters of the renowned Pan-Africanist are still not pleased.
Complaints voiced on social media include the bust not resembling Garvey, the expression not being serious as Garvey was known to be, but rather “sad, broken, defeated and spoilt”.
Another user gave the new bust a 6/10 grade, contending that there is still work to be done.
Earlier this year Pan Africanists and member of the United Negro Improvement Association, which Garvey founded, were at loggerheads with UWI over the original bust created to honour Garvey.
The impression was that the bust was rather small compared to a robust Garvey and did not properly represent his grand personality and strength as a fighter for Blacks.
After a series of discussions, the UWI agreed to replace the bust in time for the start of the 2017/2018 academic year.
