It is not strange to hear about corruption in Jamaica, or is it foreign to hear that people were fired for their involvement it.

Our problem, however, is the lack of will to successfully prosecute and impose stiff penalties to include lengthy prison sentences.

Examples need to be made of these crooks! It seems business as usual, no matter how corrupt Jamaica is perceived. No change is seen, no matter how many corruption rankings are released, or how poorly we are viewed internationally. Those involved in the act never seem to get caught and punished.

The Firearm Licensing Authority, being the latest example of an active corruption organisation, is just one too many at this time. In it, however, is another grand opportunity for us to get it right, and if the Director of Public Prosecutions cannot secure guilty verdicts for people who have corruption written all over their actions and faces. Please do us a favour and get some other lawyers on the cases.

Dealing with corruption is similar to dealing with murders. Until we can identify the players, investigate thoroughly, apprehend speedily, have quick trials, get regular convictions and imprison those found to be involved for many years. We are going nowhere. Driving fear in criminals will be our only way out, as I see it.
