Accused in downtown stabbing death gets bail
A man accused of stabbing another to death during a fight after the attempted theft of his bicycle was Wednesday offered bail in the sum of $400,000 when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.
The accused, Dalton Binda, 49, of East Queen Street in downtown Kingston, is charged with the murder of 51-year-old Donovan Williams.
Attorney Peter Champagnie, during his bail application on Wednesday, told Parish Judge Jacqueline Wilcott that his client had parked his bicycle after he stopped to talk to a girl in downtown Kingston. He added that the accused saw a man attempting to go away with his bicycle and tried to stop him, but the man engaged his client in a fight and pulled a knife. During the fight he said the man sustained a stab wound to his body.
Champagnie also told the court that following the incident his client surrendered to the police.
But the prosecution told the judge that the sequence of events was a bit different from the lawyer’s version.
The court heard that both men were fighting when Williams pulled a knife which fell and was retrieve by Binda, who used it to stab Williams in his neck.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 20 about 8:30 am after Williams rode off on Binda’s bicycle. Binda reportedly chased Williams and pushed him off the bicycle before a fight ensued between the two.
Williams was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead, while Binda handed himself over to the police.
Binda, who has no previous conviction, was subsequently offered bail on condition that he report to the Central Police Station twice weekly and surrender his travel documents.
He is to return to court on September 15.
