Senna Summerbell leads karting field
THE race for the Jamaica Karting Association’s highest honour — the Abe Ziadie Trophy — may go the way of current points leader Senna Summerbell, as defending champion Ryan Lue may not take the field for the final event come Sunday, November 19.
The revelation came after speaking with Ryan Craig Lue’s father, Craig, at last Sunday’s meet at the Palisadoes International Raceway in Kingston.
The younger Lue has been campaigning internationally, participating in the Florida Winter Tour since he first won the 2015 Abe Ziadie Championship. However, he missed Meet Five in July this year in order to honour his overseas commitments.
“We had missed one local meet which dropped us behind. But our plan is race at the Superkarts — SuperNationals (SKUSA-SN) in Las Vegas in November,” the elder Lue told Jamaica Observer’s Auto magazine.
The SKUSA-SN also falls on November 19, the same as the JKA’s season-ending meet.
“We’re not 100 per cent sure yet. But if we can make it happen, we’ll be going to Las Vegas as our first choice. If not, we’ll be in Jamaica fighting for the title,” said Lue.
Currently the two sit 10 points apart with Summerbell on 250 points to Lue’s 240.
The JKA rules allow a competitor to drop one result, usually their worst. However, with Lue missing two meets, it could make Summerbell karting champion.
Meanwhile on the track, Lue gained valuable points fighting through the two finals with Zachary Williams. For final one, it was Williams first, Lue second. In round two, their roles were reversed.
In Rotax Junior, it was a mini-Dover for the fans as the names Summerbell and Gore rang out. Senna, son of racing veteran David Summerbell Jr, battled with Tommi Gore, son of another circuit veteran Doug Gore. Summerbell won the round one final as Gore topped his rival in round two.
In Comer 50, Justin Donaldson topped the leader board with both race final wins. Zidanne Madden did a similar feat one class up in Rotax Micro Max, as did Joshua Sirgany in Rotax Senior.
The largest class on the day continues to be the time-indexed Super Rotax. Rugie Misir and David Summerbell Jr shared a final-round win each.
