CB Group/UWI 5K Run set for November 12
THE sixth-consecutive staging of the Caribbean Broilers (CB) Group/University of the West Indies (UWI) 5K Run is scheduled to start at UWI Assembly Hall, Mona, on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at 7:00am.
The annoucnement was made during yesterday’s press launch at UWI’s Regional Headquarters Building on Hermitage Road.
The event, known for including people with disabilities, will also feature a Smart Eggs K for children between four and 11 years old.
The co-patrons of this year’s CB/UWI 5K Run Smart Eggs K are Dr Douglas Orane, who is also a co-founder of the event, and Donette Chin-Loy Chang, also the chairperson for Food For The Poor, Canada.
It was noted that the five consecutive years of the event have raised some $70 million, which was used to assist over 200 students studying at the UWI Campus.
The UWI Scholarship Fund, since the inaugural staging in 2012, has awarded over 100 scholarships to outstanding students.
A $3.2-million cheque was presented to the UWI Scholarship Fund yesterday.
In the meantime, details of the November 12 event were outlined by Alfred “Frano” Francis, the race director.
He said the event has outgrown its former route, and added that the race will finish at the UWI Campus after a circular run on the school’s grounds.
According to Francis, 5,000 individuals participated last year. He hopes that more people will this year, by either running or walking.
“I am deeply honoured to play my part for a very important venture,” he added.
Participants who wish to have a first-hand view of the route can visit the website at www.uwi5K.com.jm, while registration is now open at www.runningevents.ja.com or at the Sports Department at the UWI. Entry fee is $1,200 for adults, $600 for students, while groups of 30 or more will receive a discount fee of $1,000 and $500, respectively.
Matthew Lyn, chief operating officer of CB Group, said: “For our country to change, we need to improve on our education on a whole and so we’re very happy to continue to play our part in improving access to further education for these students. We are even more encouraged by the reports of success that the scholarships recipients have had and continue to have academically and beyond,” Lyn said.
