All is set for nomination day — EOJ
KINGSTON, Jamaica — All systems are in place for the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) to receive nominations of candidates for the by-elections in St Andrew Southern, St Andrew South Western and St Mary South Eastern, the office stated on Friday.
Nominations will take place on Monday, October 9 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at designated centres within the three constituencies as follows:
St Andrew Southern – St Luke’s Church Hall, 8 Slipe Road
St Andrew South Western – Office of the Returning Officer, 253 Spanish Town Road
St Mary South Eastern – Henry Lynch Building, Top Bay, Annotto Bay
On nomination day, any individual wishing to register as a candidate is required to:
1) fill out a nomination form which has been signed by any ten or more electors registered to vote in the constituency;
2) return the form to the Returning Officer between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm; and 3) pay a nomination fee of J$3,000.
Subject to the provisions of the Constitution of Jamaica any person seeking to enter as a candidate to sit in the House of Representative should; be a citizen of Jamaica, resident in Jamaica for at least 12 months prior to the date of nomination or a Commonwealth citizen who has resided in Jamaica for at least 12 months prior to the nomination date; and at least 21 years of age.
The law requires that Nomination Day be at least five clear days after the announcement of an election; and Election Day, a minimum of 16 and a maximum of 23 days after Nomination Day.
