Bellefield vie for final second-round spot

The final second-round spot in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition is set to be filled this morning when Zone M challengers Bellefield High take on out-of-contention Porus High in their rescheduled game at Porus Community Centre. Kick-off is set for 10:00.

The game, which was interrupted in the 71st minute on Saturday, with Porus leading 1-0, was set to be replayed yesterday, but it is understood that the teams were not properly notified.

Organisers, the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), ruled yesterday that the remaining 19 minutes are to be completed.

Bellefield must win the game to edge Denbigh High on goal-difference to get second place in Zone M behind Glenmuir High, and qualify for the second round set to start tomorrow.

Five teams, including the two best third-placed teams, secured their spots on a day filled with high drama yesterday.

Former champions Frome Technical and Garvey Maceo High, as well as Paul Bogle High, booked their spots as automatic qualifiers, while Green Island High and Morant Bay bagged the best third-place spots.

Both Morant Bay High and Vere Technical finished with 20 points, but Morant Bay High, who beat Yallahs High 7-1 in Zone O, got the nod thanks to a superior goal difference of 16 goals. Vere Technical beat Zone N winners Central High 1-0 to finish with a goal difference of 12.

Frome Technical clinched second place in Zone B after a 3-1 win over Knockalva Technical to finish with 22 points, two behind winners Rusea’s High. The Rusea’s team was locked 1-1 with Green Island in a game that was interrupted by rain at half-time on Saturday. Green Island finished third on 21 points and earned a best third-place spot.

Garvey Maceo edged Kemps Hill High in Zone N to move to 21 points, one behind Central High. Both are set to meet tomorrow to decide the zone winners. Gavin Roberts scored the winner for Garvey Maceo — his seventh goal of the season.

Paul Bogle High finished second in Zone O on 23 points, three behind winners Seaforth High after they were awarded three points and a three-goal margin over St Thomas Technical after the latter was ruled to have not adequately prepared their home ground for the game.
