Sprint fest in the making
While the Joshua Morrison Memorial Cup is the listed feature on tomorrow’s 10-race card at Caymanas Park, most eyes will more than likely be trained on the ninth race, a five-furlong round (1,000m) sprint event for horses in the Open Allowance class.
Seven horses are set to rival each other as the quest to earn an entry into the rich and prestigious Diamond Mile on Saturday December 2 gathers momentum.
In this quick dash there are a number of speed merchants entered, including the likes of Gary Glitter and Sir Budget.
The Supreme Racing Guide looks at the chances of all the contenders in post position order.
GARY GLITTER – Came out of the Gold Cup, which was won by Choo Choo Blue on October 16, with his stocks still high. Gary Glitter finished a creditable fifth, just about eight lengths behind the winner — the rising star of local racing. Now Gary Glitter heads the handicaps, and more importantly, is reunited with probably his favourite rider, Rayan Wilson. Gary Glitter among these in Open Allowance, despite allowing weight all round, is still packed with enough talent to carry this one home. He has raced quite a bit since the start of the year, but is tough and is expected to be close to the leaders for most of the race, with his final battle for victory coming in the last furlong.
DWAYNE STAR – Last saw the winners’ enclosure on July 29 after defeating Phineas and Prolific Princess. Dwayne Star is a very genuine sort who rarely is out of the frame. However, with tomorrow’s race being a sprint fest, his best shot is to be off the pace, keeping as close as possible, with the telling effort coming in the stretch drive over which he is more than capable. It might be difficult for him, but he can certainly win this one if carefully ridden .
GOLDEN GLORY – This chestnut filly has come along really well, especially in the second half of the season. She won in Overnight on August 26 and then faced the might of Choo Choo Blue on September 27 when finishing in sixth place five lengths behind, then Golden Glory finished fifth behind She’s A Maneater on October 7 when she was eight lengths adrift of the winner. Golden Glory is in the process of earning her stripes at the Open Allowance level, and while doing so will need more time. In this one she has an outsider’s chance of winning.
SIR BUDGET – Has been trying his luck with some of the ‘big boys’ of late, without much success. Returning now to Open Allowance over a trip for which he is well suited, the chances of Sir Budget have been increased — especially since he is down to carry a mere 107 lbs. Sir Budget will not lead in this one, but if in the right frame of mind can be held off the pace before making an attempt in the final furlong of the race. Not without a fighting chance in this one.
RAS EMANUEL – Stepping up in class and is not yet ready to tackle these.
FORCE DE JOUR – As true as they come, Force De Jour won on last in Overnight company coming down the five-straight course, a journey for which he has shown a likeness over his years of racing. In his last victory run, Force De Jour defeated Siempre Bueno who went on to win the Ahwhofah Trophy in fine style Saturday last. Although experiencing his share of injuries, Force De Jour is known to like it when in front and being able to dictate. That task will not be an easy one tomorrow, so his best bet is to be just behind the leader(s) and then make his move in the straight. Expect another capital effort.
